Obtaining a Marriage License

Obtaining a Marriage License

A Vermont marriage license may be issued by any town clerk in the State. The Marriage license costs $60 and certified copies may be sent to you following the ceremony at $10.00 per copy.

The link below is an Application for Vermont License of Civil Marriage from the Vermont Department of Health, which both parties must sign. Once completed the application must be submitted to the Town Clerk in person by either one or both parties subject to the marriage.

Marriage License Application

The Middlebury Town Clerk’s Office is open Monday – Thursday, 8:00am am to 5:00pm. Plan to spend about ½ hour in the clerk’s office, and be prepared to show a current picture ID, a birth certificate, and verification of the dissolution of a previous marriage or civil union. The couple is responsible for making their own arrangements with an officiant to perform the ceremony. The following Middlebury Justices of the Peace perform marriage ceremonies. Charges and fees for performing the ceremony are negotiated directly with individual Justices.
